Background

Set three years after the original trilogy in Styria, a land of warring city-states, it is a tale of betrayal and revenge. Monza Murcatto, leader of the Thousand Swords mercenary company, is thrown down a mountain with her brother Benna by her employer, Grand Duke Orso of Talins. She survives and sets out to kill the seven men responsible: Orso's bodyguard Gobba, his banker Mauthis, his general Ganmark, her second-in-command Faithful Carpi, Orso's sons Prince Ario and Count Foscar, and Orso himself. Her crew includes the Northman Caul Shivers, the ex-convict Friendly, the poisoner Castor Morveer and his apprentice Day, Shylo Vitari and Nicomo Cosca.
