The Union

The realm Harod the Great founded with Bayaz's counsel, ruled from Adua.

The Union is a federated realm formed by the founding Kingdom of Midderland, the Kingdoms of Angland and Starikland, and the Protectorate cities of Dagoska and Westport. At the start of The First Law it is ruled by High King Guslav the Fifth from its capital, Adua, in Midderland. It is one of the two great empires of the Circle of the World, the other being the Gurkish Empire.

Background

Its founder and first High King was Harod the Great, some 600 years before the trilogy. Ruler of one of Midderland's many petty kingdoms, Harod accepted the advice of the Magus Bayaz, who became his most trusted counsellor, and in time Midderland was unified. The Union's laws and government, including the Closed and Open Councils and the Inquisition, were set up in that era and have changed little since. The High King is a hereditary monarch; when one dies without a clear successor, the nobles of the Open Council settle the succession by vote. Later kings include Jezal the First and Orso.
