The Ocean

A deep, perilous frontier teeming with marine life and hidden treasures at the world's edge.

The Ocean is a vast, naturally generated biome that forms the liquid boundary of the world, stretching across the far left and right edges of the map. Unlike other biomes defined by surface vegetation or underground corruption, this aquatic expanse is characterized by its immense depth, unique marine life, and the exclusive presence of water-based enemies. It serves as both a dangerous frontier for early-game adventurers and a resource-rich zone for those seeking rare materials like Sea Prisms and Clams.

Lore & Background

In the ancient history of this blocky realm, the Oceans were formed as the great boundaries where the land meets the infinite void. Long before the Dungeon or the Corruption began their slow spread, these waters housed a thriving ecosystem adapted to the crushing depths and constant currents. It is said that the spirits of the old seas dwell here, manifesting as the Jellyfish that drift in the shallows and the Sharks that patrol the deeper trenches, guarding the secrets of the deep.

In Their Own Story

The diver adjusted their gills, the bubbles escaping in a rhythmic stream as they descended past the sandy shelf. The sunlight faded into a murky blue, replaced by the bioluminescent glow of drifting jellyfish. A shadow moved in the distance—a Shark, circling with predatory grace. With a deep breath and a steady hand, the diver reached for a glowing clam on the ocean floor, unaware that the water above was beginning to turn red as the Blood Moon rose.

Reader's Guide

The Ocean generates automatically at both the far left and right edges of every world, extending from the surface down to bedrock. It is distinct from other water bodies due to its width and depth, often containing underwater caves and sandstone formations. Unique resources found here include Clams which yield Pearls or Seashells upon opening, and Sea Prisms dropped by Sharks in pre-Hardmode. The biome also supports the growth of Coral on the ocean floor, a decorative block that cannot be harvested with standard tools. During events like the Blood Moon, the Ocean becomes significantly more dangerous as enemy spawn rates increase dramatically. Crabs will appear on the surface sand, while Piranhas and Sharks become more aggressive in the water. Players should ensure they have adequate breathing gear or potions before exploring deep trenches during these times.
