Paramuricea clavata, called the violescent sea-whip, is a colonial soft coral belonging to the family Plexauridae. It acts as an ecosystem engineer, reshaping its surroundings by modifying water movement, sediment buildup, and the availability of nutrients.
This coral grows as a fan-shaped colony, with branches and a stem stiffened by gorgonin—a tough protein that forms a horn-like skeleton. A thin living layer called coenenchyme covers this skeleton, and from it extend polyps, each bearing eight feeding tentacles around a central mouth. Polyps can reach 10 mm in height, while the entire colony may grow up to one meter tall and equally wide. Its color is typically red, though parts can be yellow.
The species is found along the coasts of Spain and Portugal in the eastern Atlantic, as well as in the western Mediterranean and Ionian Seas. It lives on reefs, with its base buried in sediment, at depths from 10 to 100 meters, most often between 15 and 40 meters. First described by French naturalist Antoine Risso in 1826, it is native to these waters.
As a filter feeder, P. clavata extends its tentacles to capture drifting food, including copepods, diatoms, dinoflagellates, ciliates, and suspended organic carbon particles. Each colony is either male or female. Males release sperm into the water, and fertilization occurs on the surface of female colonies. Embryos are brooded there before being released as planula larvae. These larvae avoid light and quickly settle on the seabed, where they develop into polyps and begin secreting gorgonin to build their skeleton.
