The name Narella is believed to derive from the Latin 'nares', meaning nostril, due to the resemblance of the rows of polyps to small noses. The genus was described in 1870 by John Edward Gray, but the first species, Primnoa regularis (now Narella regularis), was described in 1860. In 1887, Edward Wright and Théophile Studer discovered several new species but placed them in the new genera Stachyodes and Calypterinus. Between 1906 and 1919 many more species were discovered, though again described under Stachyodes or Calypterinus. It was only in 1951 that Frederick Bayer synonymized these genera with Narella, establishing them as junior synonyms.

Narella are distinguished from other Primnoidae by their conspicuous polyps with very distinct large scales (sclerites). Most species have 16–18 sclerites arranged in pairs. The eight opercular scales covering the polyp tip are also paired, giving a symmetrical appearance. Physical differences among species primarily involve the shape and texture of the scales, which are difficult to identify in the field, so broader identification guides focus on branching instead. The axis of the corals is made of aragonite, while their spicules are high Mg calcite. They anchor to hard substrates using calcareous discoid holdfasts.

Narella species are found worldwide, but each region generally has a distinct group of sympatric species, with only a few species occurring in multiple regions. This pattern, combined with high adaptive radiation, suggests many undiscovered species exist.
