Gods are mortal; truth is blood.

The Obsidian tribes, among them the Valkyries, are revealed to have been systematically deceived by the Society Golds. Ragnar Volarus, known as the "Shield of Tinos," makes several fruitless attempts to enlighten his people, and his sister Sefi later discovers that the Gods her tribe worships are mortal Golds in disguise.

Lore & Background

The Obsidian tribes worshipped Gods who were in truth mortal Golds in disguise. Ragnar Volarus, an unusually loud-voiced warrior, made several fruitless attempts to enlighten his kin, while his mother, Alia Snowsparrow, knowingly kept the other Obsidians in the dark. The turning point arrived when Sefi the Quiet, Ragnar's sister and heir to the Valkyrie throne, witnessed the deception firsthand. Upon learning that their deities were mere mortals, she deposed Alia, broke her silence-oath, and executed her mother for the betrayal.

Reader's Guide

However, once the deception was exposed by Ragnar and Sefi, their role shifted entirely. Under Sefi they joined the Rising's fleet, and after the victory over the Sword Armada the other Obsidian tribes recognized her as their first pan-tribal queen. Sefi's leadership was instrumental in causing other Obsidian tribes to ally with the Rising.
