Leo Valdez

A fiery mechanic who builds hope from scrap while fighting his own demons.

Leo Valdez is a demigod, the son of the mortal Esperanza Valdez and the Greek god Hephaestus. He is one of the seven protagonists and a main character in The Heroes of Olympus series (2010–2014). He also appears in The Trials of Apollo series (2016–2020). Leo is known for his genius-level mechanical aptitude and his ability to manipulate fire, which sets him apart from other children of Hephaestus.

Background

Leo Valdez is the son of Hephaestus, god of fire and forge. His mother, Esperanza Valdez, was a mortal. When Leo was eight, Gaea burned down his mother's machine shop, resulting in her death. Leo was led to believe the fire was his fault, as he had, and still has, pyrokinesis. Leo's remaining family blamed him for her death and left him a foster child. At Camp Half-Blood, his immunity to fire lets him corral and tame the bronze dragon Festus. Inspired by a blueprint in Bunker 9 and a picture he drew in kindergarten, he creates the Argo II, the flying ship the seven demigods of the Great Prophecy sail on to reach Greece. His character arc is one of redemption and healing. In The House of Hades he becomes trapped on Ogygia, where he and Calypso fall in love; at the end of The Blood of Olympus he returns and frees her.
