The Heroes of Olympus: The House of Hades

Split destinies: one descent into eternal fire, one race through a continent at war.

The House of Hades marks the dark midpoint of Rick Riordan’s The Heroes of Olympus series, stripping the Seven of their safety net. After Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase fall into Tartarus at the end of The Mark of Athena, the story splits: the two cross Tartarus to the Doors of Death, while the other five demigods, aided by Nico di Angelo and Coach Hedge, sail to Greece to close the Doors from the mortal side. This volume plunges readers into the ancient Greek underworld’s most terrifying layer, testing the heroes’ resolve against primordial horrors where even hope is a liability.

Lore & Background

Inside this underworld layer, reality bends under the crushing weight of despair. Percy and Annabeth navigate a landscape that actively hunts their minds, confronting personal demons alongside physical terrors. Survival here demands more than brute strength; it relies on an unbreakable bond and the realization that some battles are fought in the shadows of sanity. Meanwhile, above ground, the other demigods struggle with their own internal fractures as they race against time to prevent Gaea from waking fully.

Reader's Guide

Crossing Italy, the Argo II is raided by the Kerkopes in Bologna, and in Venice Frank, Hazel and Nico obtain barley cakes from Triptolemus to protect them from poison in the Necromanteion. The narrative alternates between their desperate struggle in the abyss and the remaining heroes' journey through Italy and Greece. In Tartarus, Percy and Annabeth are aided by the Titan Iapetus, now called Bob, and the giant Damasen. Simultaneously, Jason, Piper, Leo, Frank, and Hazel race against time, battling giants and ancient gods to keep their group from fracturing under pressure. Percy and Annabeth's group fight the personification of Tartarus and destroy the chains holding the Doors in place; Bob stays behind to defend the Doors while the two escape and reunite with the other five, who close the Doors of Death.
