Kronos is the defeated King of the Titans who leads the Titan forces in their attempt to destroy the world. In this universe, he was overthrown millennia ago but returned to orchestrate a catastrophic war against Mount Olympus. His primary goal is to rise again and wipe out the current order, using human agents to destabilize the gods' defenses. The series follows protagonist Percy Jackson as he works to prevent Kronos from succeeding in his plan to bring about total destruction. This conflict drives the narrative of the first five books, culminating in a massive battle where the fate of Olympus hangs in the balance.

Kronos was once the ruler of the world before being defeated by his children during an ancient war. After World War II, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades swore not to father any more children, because their children were too powerful and had the potential to cause immense slaughter. The pact followed the Great Prophecy, issued by the Oracle at the end of World War II, that a child of the Big Three would determine whether Olympus was preserved or destroyed. Kronos was influencing events long before the heroes learn, in The Battle of the Labyrinth, that he has possessed Luke Castellan. He manipulated Luke into stealing Zeus's Master Bolt to instigate a war between the Olympians, allowing the Titans to rise again. Kronos also manipulated Ares, who helped cover up Luke's crime to instigate a war between the Olympians.
