The immortal centaur mentor who trains heroes across centuries.

Chiron serves as the Activities Director at Camp Half-Blood and a mentor to countless demigods. To mortals, he appears as Mr. Brunner, a Latin teacher in a wheelchair; in Wrath of the Triple Goddess, Percy learns the wheelchair is not just a disguise, as Chiron was once accidentally shot in the leg by Hercules. He is the mythological Chiron, granted immortality by the gods for as long as he is needed to train heroes. As Percy Jackson's mentor, Chiron guides campers through their training while hiding his true nature until the moment is right.

Lore & Background

Chiron is a son of Kronos, distinct from other centaurs who are often wild. In the mortal world, he initially poses as Mr. Brunner at Percy's school, where he first appears in The Lightning Thief. His connection to his father is a source of conflict; in The Sea of Monsters, after Thalia's tree is poisoned and the poisoning is discovered, the campers blame Chiron because he is a son of Kronos, leading to his banishment. He is exonerated after Percy tricks Luke into confessing, and he arrives with his cousins, the Party Ponies, to rescue Percy and his friends from the Princess Andromeda. In The Last Olympian, Chiron directly confronts his father Kronos in battle and is defeated. After Kronos' defeat, Chiron allows Rachel into Camp Half-Blood to become the new Oracle of Delphi.

Reader's Guide

His role evolves from a guiding mentor to an active defender when Olympus is threatened, such as during the Battle of Manhattan where he leads reinforcements. In The Lost Hero, Chiron refuses to tell the Greeks about the Romans, as he has sworn to keep the secret due to the historic rivalry between the two. He also participates in a funeral alongside Nico for campers killed in the final battle with Gaea. In The Tower of Nero, he personally leads reinforcements from camp to help Apollo, disguising it as a field trip for the youngest campers.
