Minotaur
The part-man, part-bull monster who chased Percy all the way to Camp Half-Blood.
The Minotaur, whose birth name is Asterion, is a monster that is part man, part bull. In The Lightning Thief it attacks Percy Jackson and his mother Sally on the way to Camp Half-Blood, and Hades teleports Sally to the Underworld during the attack. Percy defeats the monster atop Half-Blood Hill and keeps its broken horn as a spoil of war, later hanging it on his cabin wall.
Lore & Background
In The Court of the Dead, the Minotaur is named as Asterion, the son of Pasiphaë and the Cretan Bull. It returns in The Last Olympian as a general of Kronos' army at Williamsburg Bridge, now wearing armor, and is defeated by Percy again. In The House of Hades, its history is mentioned after Piper and Leo meet its mother at the Doors of Death. That mother, the sorceress Pasiphaë, resents the gods for punishing her with the Minotaur's birth, while her husband Minos, who caused the problem in the first place, holds a place as a judge in the Underworld. In The Court of the Dead it returns once more, going by its birth name Asterion, showing remorse for its past actions and a desire to change, and at the end of the book it settles at Camp Jupiter with other mythics who feel the same way.
Reader's Guide
In the 2010 film, Percy kills the Minotaur with its own horn after it seemingly kills his mother, and Hades later reveals that the Minotaur abducted Sally to the Underworld to trade for the bolt. In the film the Minotaur's head resembles a cape buffalo's head; in the TV series it has ears like an American Brahman.
