Lore & Background

Dressrosa is a vibrant nation known for its perpetual sunshine and cheerful atmosphere, yet beneath this facade lies a history of tragedy. The kingdom was once ruled by King Riku Doldo III until he was forced to abdicate by Donquixote Doflamingo. For years, the populace lived in a delusion created by Sugar's Devil Fruit powers, causing them to forget their true history and view Doflamingo as a hero while erasing memories of the rightful king. The island also serves as a critical hub for the production of SMILE fruits, artificial Zoan-type Devil Fruits that grant users animal abilities; however, those who fail to successfully eat a SMILE are cursed with an inability to express emotions other than smiling, losing their original facial expressions and the ability to cry entirely.

In Their Own Story

The air in the Corrida Colosseum hummed with the roar of a thousand spectators, their faces painted with joyous masks that didn't quite reach their eyes. Above the arena, the sun beat down on gladiators who fought not for glory, but to claim a fruit that could change the fate of nations. In the shadows, a man in a feathered coat watched with a smirk, knowing that every clash was merely a pawn move in his grand design. But as the dust settled and the truth began to bleed through the cracks of the kingdom's illusion, the laughter turned to screams, and the Birdcage descended to seal away a lie that had lasted too long.

Reader's Guide

The saga begins with Luffy entering the Corrida Colosseum disguised as 'Lucy' to win the Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit), which belonged to his late brother Ace. During the tournament, he forms an uneasy alliance with Trafalgar Law and meets allies like the samurai Kin'emon and the dwarf tribe known as the Tontatta. Simultaneously, the Straw Hat crew splits up; Zoro gets lost in the city while Sanji, Usopp, Robin, Franky, and Brook navigate the political intrigue of the capital. As Luffy advances through the tournament brackets, the truth about King Riku is revealed to the public, shattering Doflamingo's control. The Warlord activates his ultimate ability, the 'Birdcage,' trapping the entire island in a deadly barrier that slowly shrinks, forcing everyone inside to fight until only one remains. Luffy awakens his Haki abilities and engages in an epic battle against Doflamingo, while Law confronts the former Warlord's right-hand man, Trebol. The conflict concludes with Luffy utilizing Gear Fourth to defeat Doflamingo, causing the Birdcage to vanish and restoring King Riku to the throne. The fall of the Donquixote family leads to the destruction of the SMILE factory, a major blow to Kaido's forces, and sets in motion the formation of the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai Alliance.
