Lore & Background

The execution came 22 years before the Straw Hat crew formed, and before Portgas D. Rouge gave birth to his son Ace. With his final words Roger announced that his treasure, the One Piece, was there for anyone who could find it, which set off the Great Pirate Era. The Marine officer Sengoku was celebrated as a hero for cornering him, and afterwards took in Roger's son Ace. Years later, when Luffy smiled at his own near-execution in Loguetown, the Marine Smoker saw Roger's attitude in him.
