East Blue Saga

Where Luffy sets sail and gathers his first crewmates.

The East Blue Saga is both the first saga and the introductory saga of the One Piece manga and anime. Monkey D. Luffy meets the Red Hair Pirates as a young boy living in East Blue and swears to become the next Pirate King; ten years later he sets sail and has his first adventures while recruiting the first members of his pirate crew.

Background

The saga is made up of six story arcs: the Romance Dawn, Orange Town, Syrup Village, Baratie, Arlong Park and Loguetown arcs, plus the anime-only Warship Island Arc (2001). It ran in the manga from 1997 to 1999 and in the Japanese anime broadcast from 1999 to 2001, and is followed by the Arabasta Saga.

In both the manga and the anime the saga has no main antagonist, following a "villain of the week" format in which each arc has its own antagonists. The first season of the live-action series adapted Monkey D. Garp as a main antagonist to serve as the main threat.
