Unidentioidea
Superfamily established for a family with mosaic traits.
Unidentioidea is a superfamily of sea slugs, specifically aeolid nudibranchs, which are marine gastropod molluscs. It was created to house the family Unidentiidae, a group that had never been comfortably placed in any existing superfamily because of its unusual combination of features—described as a "bizarre" mix of traits drawn from several major aeolidacean superfamilies, a pattern referred to as "mosaic" traits.
Under a 2025 classification by Korshunova and colleagues, Unidentiidae was placed within Unidentioidea. That study found some support for Unidentiidae being sister to Fionoidea, but the support was not strong. Because Unidentiidae never fit well elsewhere, the new superfamily was established. The genus *Phetia* was added to the family to hold the species formerly known as *Piseinotecus soussi*, as genetic data strongly grouped it with Unidentiid genera. The same study determined that the earlier work placing *P. soussi* in *Piseinotecus* had made a fully incorrect analysis of its reproductive system, leading to the misplacement. The remaining species of *Piseinotecus* and its family Piseinotecidae were left as superfamilia *incertae sedis* within Aeolidacea, due to insufficient data on those rarer species.
More recently, in 2026, Ekimova and colleagues tentatively suggested that Piseinotecidae is a senior synonym of Unidentiidae, noting that previously established diagnostic features for Piseinotecidae appear to match Unidentiidae completely. The study acknowledged that hastily synonymizing groups without molecular data is often unwise because of possible unknown convergent evolution, but also argued that maintaining separate families solely due to a lack of molecular data sets an impractical precedent. The 2026 study agreed that *Piseinotecus soussi* likely requires its own genus, but chose not to recognize *Phetia* as valid without more data from other *Piseinotecus* species. Although Piseinotecidae (and thus the synonymized Unidentiidae) was placed under Fionoidea in that 2026 work, all analyses were done only at the family level or narrower, with no discussion of superfamilies.
