This mindset was tested during the Chunin Exams when he faced Gaara, a ninja from the village of Sunagakure. Despite opening five of the eight chakra gates and using the forbidden Hidden Lotus technique, Gaara crushed Lee's left arm and leg, injuring him to the point that he must abandon being a ninja. Later, Tsunade, a Konohagakure medical ninja, offered to operate on him with a fifty percent chance of failure. Guy encouraged Lee to have the operation, which ultimately succeeded in healing his arm and leg.
