Orochimaru had secretly murdered the Fourth Kazekage and taken his place so that he could get close to his old teacher when the invasion began. The Chunin Exams provided the perfect cover, gathering young talent in one place while the village was distracted by celebration and competition. This strategic deception allowed Sound Ninja to infiltrate the gates undetected until it was too late. The Third Hokage is taken hostage by his former student while the Sound Four raise a barrier around them so that nobody can interfere. Hiruzen Sarutobi gives his life through the Reaper Death Seal to seal Orochimaru's arms and take away his jutsu. For the younger generation, this event marked the end of innocence. Sasuke already carried the Cursed Seal that Orochimaru had given him in the Forest of Death, and during the invasion Naruto fought and defeated Gaara, the host of the One-Tail.
