Vaughtia was introduced as a new muricid genus in 1995, placed within the subfamilies Muricinae and Ocenebrinae. The genus includes species originally described under other genera, such as Vaughtia babingtoni, Vaughtia dunkeri, and Vaughtia fenestrata. A revision of the genus from southern Madagascar was published in 2012, which also described three new species from off the Eastern Cape, South Africa: Vaughtia dawnbrinkae, Vaughtia olivemeyerae, and Vaughtia parvifusus. One species, Vaughtia transkeiensis, is considered a synonym of Gemixystus transkeiensis.
