It belongs to the family Muricidae, commonly known as murex snails or rock snails. The genus includes a number of extant and fossil species, such as Typhinellus amoenus, Typhinellus androyensis, Typhinellus bicolor, and the fossil † Typhinellus chipolanus. Several species have been described more recently, including Typhinellus constrictus, Typhinellus jacolombi, Typhinellus laminatus, and Typhinellus mirbatensis, all from 2015. Some species originally placed in Typhinellus have since been moved to other genera; for example, Typhinellus lamyi is now considered a synonym of Typhina lamyi, and Typhinellus sowerbyi is treated as a synonym of Typhinellus labiatus.
