Rapa (gastropod)
Genus of thin-shelled murex snails with a wide subrecurved canal.
Rapa is a genus of marine gastropods belonging to the murex or rock snail family, Muricidae. These sea snails have a thin, globe-shaped shell that is pear-like in form, with a perforated central axis. The umbilicus is partially hidden by a reflected inner lip. The shell’s spire is blunt, and the opening is oblong, extending forward into a wide, slightly curved canal. This genus can be distinguished from the related genus *Rapana* by its extended aperture canal, thin and simple whorls, a free and reflexed inner lip, and a moderate-sized umbilicus. Recognized species include *Rapa bulbiformis*, *Rapa franzhuberi*, *Rapa incurva*, and *Rapa rapa*. Several names once considered distinct species are now treated as synonyms, mostly of *Rapa rapa* or *Rapana rapiformis*, and one fossil species has been reassigned to the genus *Gyrodes*.

Lore & Background
The genus Rapa is distinguished from the related genus Rapana by several shell characters: Rapa has a produced canal of the aperture, thin simple whorls, a free reflexed inner lip, and a moderate umbilicus, whereas Rapana lacks these features. The shell is described as thin and globosely pyriform, with the axis perforate and the umbilicus partly concealed by the reflected inner lip. The spire is obtuse, and the aperture is oblong, extending anteriorly into a wide subrecurved canal.
Species within the genus include Rapa bulbiformis, Rapa franzhuberi, Rapa incurva, and the type species Rapa rapa. Several names have been placed in synonymy with Rapa rapa, including Rapa papyracea, Rapa pellucida, Rapa penardi, Rapa striata, and Rapa tenuis. Other names, such as Rapa bulbosa and Rapa volema, are considered synonyms of Rapana rapiformis. The fossil species †Rapa supraplicata is a synonym of †Gyrodes supraplicatus.
Reader's Guide
The genus Rapa holds significance within the family Muricidae as a distinct group of thin-shelled murex snails. Its separation from the similar genus Rapana is based on consistent morphological differences in the aperture, whorls, inner lip, and umbilicus, which are important for taxonomic classification. The type species Rapa rapa, described by Linnaeus, anchors the genus and has accumulated numerous synonyms over time, reflecting historical confusion in naming. The inclusion of recently described species such as Rapa franzhuberi indicates ongoing taxonomic work. The fossil record includes a species originally placed in Rapa but later reassigned to Gyrodes, showing the fluidity of paleontological classification. The genus is notable for its globosely pyriform shell shape and the wide subrecurved canal, features that distinguish it from other muricids. Its legacy lies in its role in understanding the diversity and evolutionary relationships among rock snails, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region where these snails are found.
