Murex Snails, Part 2 Codexery

Pagodulinae

A subfamily of predatory sea snails in the murex family.

Pagodulinae

Pagodulinae is a subfamily of predatory sea snails, which are marine gastropod mollusks belonging to the Muricidae family—commonly called murex or rock shells. Its members were once classified under the broader subfamily Trophoninae. The subfamily includes numerous genera, such as *Abyssotrophon*, *Actinotrophon*, *Axymene*, *Boreotrophon*, *Comptella*, *Enixotrophon*, *Lamellitrophon*, *Lenitrophon* (currently unassigned within Muricidae), *Nodulotrophon*, *Pagodula*, *Paratrophon*, *Paziella*, *†Peritrophon*, *Poirieria*, *Terefundus*, *Trophonella*, *Trophonopsis*, *†Vesanula*, *Xymene*, *Xymenella*, *Xymenopsis*, and *Zeatrophon*. Several former genera, including *Chalmon*, *Houartiella*, and *Pinon*, have been synonymized with *Trophonopsis* or *Pagodula*.

Lore & Background

The subfamily Pagodulinae was established to accommodate a group of genera that had earlier been placed within the broader subfamily Trophoninae. Its constituent genera include Abyssotrophon, Actinotrophon, Axymene, Boreotrophon, Comptella, Enixotrophon, Lamellitrophon, Nodulotrophon, Pagodula, Paratrophon, Paziella, Poirieria, Terefundus, Trophonella, Trophonopsis, Xymene, Xymenella, Xymenopsis, and Zeatrophon, as well as the extinct genera Peritrophon and Vesanula. The genus Lenitrophon is listed as belonging to the subfamily [unassigned] Muricidae. Several genera have been brought into synonymy: Chalmon and Houartiella are synonyms of Trophonopsis, and Pinon is a synonym of Pagodula.

Reader's Guide

The recognition of Pagodulinae as a distinct subfamily reflects a refinement in the classification of muricid gastropods, particularly those formerly lumped into Trophoninae. This reorganization, supported by studies of Cenozoic evolution in the Southern Ocean, clarifies the relationships among numerous genera of predatory snails that inhabit marine environments worldwide. The subfamily includes both extant and fossil genera, indicating a long evolutionary history. Its members are characterized by their predatory feeding habits and are found among the diverse rock shells and murex shells. The synonymy of certain genera, such as Houartiella and Chalmon under Trophonopsis, and Pinon under Pagodula, demonstrates ongoing taxonomic revision within the group. The subfamily's significance lies in its contribution to understanding the biodiversity and evolutionary patterns of Muricidae, especially in Southern Ocean contexts, where many of its genera are represented.
