Laevityphis
A genus of murex snails with both living and fossil species.
Laevityphis is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks, commonly known as murex or rock snails, belonging to the family Muricidae. These sea snails include both living species and those known only from fossils. The genus comprises four recognized species: Laevityphis bullisi, Laevityphis libos, Laevityphis tillierae, and Laevityphis tubuliger. Additionally, several fossil species have been assigned to the genus, including Laevityphis costaricensis, Laevityphis gracilis, Laevityphis jungi, Laevityphis linguiferus, Laevityphis ludbrookae, Laevityphis muticus, Laevityphis schencki, and Laevityphis tepungai. One species, Laevityphis transcurrens, is now considered a synonym of Siphonochelus transcurrens.

Lore & Background
The genus Laevityphis was established within the family Muricidae, which includes the murex snails or rock snails. The species within this genus have been described by various authors over time, including Gertman in 1969 for Laevityphis bullisi, and Houart in 2017 for Laevityphis libos. Several fossil species have been named, such as Laevityphis costaricensis by Olsson in 1922 and Laevityphis gracilis by Conrad in 1833. The genus also includes species that were originally placed in other genera, as seen with Laevityphis tubuliger described by Thiele in 1925. One species, Laevityphis transcurrens, has been brought into synonymy with Siphonochelus transcurrens. The taxonomic understanding of Laevityphis has been updated in a 2021 review of the Typhinae subfamily, which examined species from New Caledonia, the South China Sea, and Western Australia.
Reader's Guide
Laevityphis represents a component of the diverse muricid fauna, with its species distributed across both modern and fossil records. The genus includes taxa described from various regions, including New Caledonia, the South China Sea, and Western Australia, as documented in a 2021 taxonomic revision. The presence of multiple fossil species, such as Laevityphis costaricensis from the work of Olsson and Laevityphis gracilis from Conrad, indicates a long evolutionary history within the Muricidae. The synonymy of Laevityphis transcurrens with Siphonochelus transcurrens highlights the ongoing refinement of taxonomic boundaries within the group. The genus continues to be studied, with new species like Laevityphis libos described as recently as 2017, and the 2021 revision providing a modern framework for understanding its relationships. The external reference to Cossmann's 1903 work on paleoconchology suggests that the genus has been of interest to paleontologists as well as malacologists.
