Ruined Portals are believed to be the calcified scars of these unstable attempts at travel, left behind by unknown architects who sought to bridge the Overworld and the Nether before vanishing into the void. Some scholars suggest that the crying obsidian found in certain ruins weeps for those lost during failed crossings. The presence of gold within their chests hints at a transactional history, perhaps payment made to entities beyond the frame. Though silent now, these structures hum with residual energy, occasionally igniting spontaneously as if remembering the fire needed to open them. In the Nether, these ruins are more common and darker, often guarded by Piglins who view the broken frames as sacred or dangerous territory. The Overworld variants remain hidden secrets in deep caves or atop high peaks, waiting for a brave soul to repair what was once shattered.

Ruined Portals generate randomly throughout both the Overworld and the Nether dimensions. They appear as incomplete frames of obsidian, often partially buried or exposed on the surface. Some structures generate with fire already ignited within the frame, while others remain dormant until the player adds fuel. Explorers must exercise caution, as these sites frequently contain lava pools that pose a significant burn risk during excavation. Inside most Ruined Portals, players will find a loot chest secured behind the structure's debris. This treasure trove is highly valued for early-game resources, commonly containing gold ingots, iron bars, and rare items like saddles or flint and steel. Defensively, the structures themselves offer no protection against enemies. In fact, they often serve as ambush points where hostile mobs may spawn nearby due to lighting conditions or dimension-specific rules. Players should clear the surrounding area before attempting to mine the valuable obsidian blocks for their own portal construction projects.
