Blaze

Fiery guardians of the Nether fortress, holding the key to the End.

Blazes are hostile mobs native to the Nether dimension in Minecraft. They are found within Nether fortresses, the stone brick structures that generate in the Nether. These mobs are notable for dropping blaze rods, a key item needed to access the End dimension. Blazes attack by shooting fireballs at players.

Lore & Background

In the Nether, a hell-like underworld dimension accessed via an obsidian portal and composed mainly of lava, Nether fortresses generate containing mobs such as wither skeletons and blazes. Blazes can drop blaze rods, which are needed to access the End dimension. To reach the End, players must craft eyes of ender using an ender pearl and blaze powder—blaze powder being crafted from blaze rods. Thus, blazes are a necessary step in the game's progression toward the final boss.

In Their Own Story

The player navigates the dangerous corridors of a Nether fortress, wary of the shrieking ghasts and the clatter of wither skeletons. Ahead, a cluster of blazes hovers, their fiery bodies casting an orange glow on the netherrack walls. One launches a fireball; the player dodges and strikes back, collecting a blaze rod from the defeated mob. This rod will later be ground into blaze powder, combined with an ender pearl, and thrown to locate a stronghold—the gateway to the End.

Reader's Guide

Blazes are hostile mobs that spawn in Nether fortresses within the Nether dimension. They attack by shooting fireballs at the player. Defeating a blaze yields blaze rods, which are essential for progression: blaze rods can be crafted into blaze powder, which is used to create eyes of ender. Eyes of ender are thrown to locate strongholds, underground structures in the Overworld that contain End portals. To activate an End portal, players must place eyes of ender into each of the twelve end portal frames. Therefore, blazes are a critical mob for any player aiming to reach the End dimension and fight the Ender Dragon. Players should come prepared with ranged weapons or a shield to block fireballs, and consider fire resistance potions due to the Nether's hazardous environment.
