Ancient City
A silent, sculk-choked metropolis buried beneath the world where a blind guardian sleeps.
The Ancient City is a colossal, subterranean structure hidden deep within the Deep Dark biome, serving as one of the most dangerous and mysterious locations in the Overworld. Unlike typical villages or strongholds, these cities were not built by humanoids but appear to be remnants of an ancient civilization that once thrived before the age of endermen and creepers. They are characterized by their massive scale, constructed almost entirely from deepslate variants, sculk blocks, and reinforced deepslate, creating a labyrinthine environment that pulses with a faint, eerie bioluminescence.

Lore & Background
The true horror of these cities lies not in the ruins themselves, but in the creature they were built to contain: The Warden. The city acts as a massive sensory array, where every step, dropped item, or broken block sends ripples through the sculk network. If the vibrations become too frequent, the deep slumber of the Warden is disturbed. This blind entity, born of pure rage and sound perception, rises to eliminate whatever dared wake it, making the city a tomb for the careless rather than a treasure trove.
In Their Own Story
The torch flickered, casting long, dancing shadows against walls of dark blue deepslate tiles. The air was cold and smelled faintly of wet stone and something ancient, like dust that had settled for millennia. Every step felt heavy; the crunch of gravel on sculk blocks sent a visible ripple through the floor, glowing with a sickly purple hue. Suddenly, the silence broke—not with a sound, but with a sensation, a low hum vibrating through the soles of my boots. In the distance, a massive block of reinforced deepslate shifted, and a pair of blinding white eyes opened in the darkness.
Reader's Guide
Ancient Cities generate exclusively within the Deep Dark biome at extreme depths, usually between Y-level -52 and -64. They are rare structures that do not spawn near other major landmarks like strongholds or villages. The structure is a sprawling grid of rooms connected by corridors, featuring unique functional blocks such as Sculk Catalysts (which convert XP into sculk), Calibrated Sculk Sensors, and Echo Shards found in chests. Loot tables include rare items like the Nautilus Shell, Music Disc 5 (Pigstep), and the crucial Echo Shard needed for crafting Recovery Compasses. Defensive mechanics are entirely passive but deadly; the city is filled with sculk sensors that detect vibrations from player movement, projectiles, or item drops. These sensors can trigger the spawning of The Warden if too many alerts occur in a short timeframe. Players must move sneakily or use wool to dampen sound. In gameplay, these cities serve as high-risk, high-reward endgame destinations for gathering unique resources and facing the ultimate challenge of surviving the Warden without direct combat.
Did You Know?
- The Ancient City is the only structure in Minecraft that contains Reinforced Deepslate, a block that cannot be broken by players even with Silk Touch.
- Music Disc 5 (Pigstep) can only be found in chests within these cities or in Bastion Remnants.
- The city's design intentionally avoids placing torches or light sources to maintain the darkness required for the Deep Dark biome.
- Sculk Catalysts inside the city will spread sculk blocks across the floor if a player dies nearby, converting their experience orbs into more of the dangerous substance.
