Sterkh-BM

Belarusian autonomous UAV designed for domestic and allied markets.

Sterkh-BM

The Sterkh-BM is a Belarusian unmanned aerial vehicle developed by the Minsk Aircraft Overhaul Plant. Powered by a gasoline piston engine, it can take off, navigate a preset route, and land without any operator input, and it is capable of operating from nearly any surface. The UAV weighs 65 kilograms, has a wingspan of 3.8 meters, and reaches a cruising speed of 120 km/h, with a top speed of 200 km/h. Its maximum range is 240 kilometers, and its service ceiling is 3,000 meters. The aircraft obtains positioning data through GPS and can switch to GLONASS if needed; if GPS signals are disrupted, a ground-based module can simulate the signal. Several units have reportedly been assembled, with plans to produce up to ten per year, though batch production was initially targeted for 2013. The plant intends to sell the Sterkh-BM primarily to Belarus’s Defense, Interior, and Emergencies ministries, to which proposals have already been sent, and it also aims to market the UAV within the CIS and CSTO. The plant’s CEO, Evgeni Vajtsekhovich, has stated that Cuba is interested not only in purchasing the Sterkh-BM but also in establishing joint assembly of the aircraft there. The design cost of the UAV was approximately US$500,000.

Lore & Background

The Sterkh-BM was developed by Minsk Aircraft Overhaul Plant in Belarus. Plans existed to begin batch production in 2013, and several units are said to have been assembled. The plant intends to produce up to ten per year. The UAV is expected to be sold primarily to the Belarusian Defense Ministry, Interior Ministry, and Emergencies Ministry, with proposals already sent to those ministries. There are also plans to promote the Sterkh-BM onto the CIS and CSTO markets. Minsk Aircraft Overhaul Plant CEO Evgeni Vajtsekhovich has stated that Cuba is interested not only in acquiring the Sterkh-BM but also in establishing a joint assembly manufacturing facility in Cuba.

Reader's Guide

The Sterkh-BM represents a modest but notable entry in Belarus's unmanned aerial vehicle sector, designed for domestic government use and potential export within the CIS and CSTO. Its autonomous flight capability and ability to operate from unprepared surfaces give it operational flexibility. The interest from Cuba suggests a potential for international collaboration beyond the immediate region. The design cost of US$500,000 indicates a relatively low-budget development. The UAV's reliance on GPS with GLONASS as a backup, plus a ground-based signal mimic module, shows attention to navigation resilience. However, the planned batch production starting in 2013 and the limited number of units assembled so far suggest a slow or limited rollout. The Sterkh-BM is positioned as a multi-role platform for defense, interior, and emergency services, but its actual deployment and impact remain modest based on available information.
