The Punisher is a Marvel Comics antihero created by writer Gerry Conway with artists John Romita Sr. and Ross Andru. He first appeared as an adversary of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (February 1974).

The Punisher is Frank Castle, a Sicilian American former U.S. Marine. After his wife and two children are killed by the mob for witnessing a murder in Central Park, and the police fail to convict the killers, Castle takes justice into his own hands and begins a one-man war on organized crime in New York City that has never ended.

Reader's Guide

Castle has no superpowers and relies on his military skills in marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and guerrilla warfare; the white skull on his chest is his trademark. His supporting cast includes weapons engineer Microchip and former marine Rachel Cole-Alves, and his archenemy is the scarred mercenary Jigsaw. Spider-Man and Daredevil, who fight crime with far more restraint, are often set against him. Conway drew on Don Pendleton's Executioner novels when creating him.
