Originally a frail young man from Brooklyn, he was transformed into a super soldier via Erskine's serum, granting him enhanced durability, strength, and athleticism. A childhood best friend of Bucky Barnes, Rogers served with the Howling Commandos against Hydra during World War II before being frozen in the Arctic for nearly seventy years. Revived in the 21st century, he became a founding member and leader of the Avengers, guiding them through internal conflicts over the Sokovia Accords and the Blip initiated by Thanos.

Born on July 4, 1918, in Brooklyn to Joseph and Sarah Rogers, Steve Rogers faced significant health challenges including asthma, scoliosis, and heart arrhythmia. Despite being only 5-foot-4-inch tall and weighing 90 pounds, he repeatedly attempted to enlist until Dr. Abraham Erskine approved him for the super-soldier experiment due to his unwavering desire to serve. After receiving the serum and vita-rays, Rogers emerged significantly taller and more muscular, only to lose Erskine to a Hydra assassin.

With the formula lost, Senator Brandt had Rogers tour as Captain America to sell War Bonds before he led a solo rescue mission in Italy. There, he freed his best friend Bucky Barnes and 400 prisoners from a Hydra facility. Rogers then formed the Howling Commandos with elite soldiers rescued during the operation. Armed by Howard Stark with a nearly indestructible vibranium shield, the team captured Dr. Arnim Zola on a train, though Barnes fell to his presumed death during the battle.

In the final assault on Hydra's stronghold, Rogers learned of Schmidt's plan to use weapons of mass destruction. After Schmidt vanished upon handling the Tesseract, Rogers crashed his plane into the Arctic with Carter, ending his active duty for nearly seven decades.
