The path to bringing Wolverine to the screen was turbulent. In 1984, writers Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas drafted an X-Men screenplay under Orion Pictures, but financial troubles stalled production. By 1989, Stan Lee and Chris Claremont discussed an adaptation with Carolco Pictures, featuring James Cameron as producer and Kathryn Bigelow directing; Bob Hoskins was considered for Wolverine before the deal collapsed over a shift toward Spider-Man. After Carolco's bankruptcy, Fox acquired the rights in 1994 following the success of their animated series.
