The narrative explores deep tragedy within this dynamic: in a distant future timeline, a telepathically-induced seizure causes Xavier to accidentally kill numerous mutants, including several X-Men, nearly driving his race to extinction before being cared for by James "Logan" Howlett. This Logan later assists an unceremoniously murdered Xavier against the Reavers, led by Donald Pierce and Zander Rice, while escorting a young mutant named Laura across the Canadian border.
