Iron Fist

The latest successor to an ancient lineage of warriors who channel chi into a fist of iron.

Iron Fist is Daniel Thomas 'Danny' Rand-K'ai, a martial arts practitioner and wielder of a mystical force that allows him to summon and focus his chi. Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, the character debuted in Marvel Premiere #15 (May 1974), inspired by kung fu films like King Boxer (Five Fingers of Death). Rand's power originates from K'un-L'un, a city that appears on Earth every 10 years. The creators borrowed story elements from Bill Everett's Amazing-Man (1939), which itself drew from James Hilton's Lost Horizon. Thomas noted the name came from a 'ceremony of the Iron Fist' in the film, and he worked with Kane to design the character, including a dragon brand on his chest inspired by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Bullseye.

Lore & Background

Danny Rand is not the first Iron Fist; The Immortal Iron Fist series established a long tradition of incarnations, making him merely the most recent. His origin story involves K'un-L'un, a hidden city appearing on Earth once per decade. In the 1970s, Rand frequently appeared with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, known as the Daughters of the Dragon. His relationship with Misty Knight marked the first interracial romance in Marvel Comics history, featuring the first long-term interracial couple and an age gap, as Knight was significantly older. A subplot involving the Steel Serpent remained unresolved when his solo series ended but was wrapped up in Marvel Team-Up #63–64, where Rand kissed Misty Knight.

His publication history includes numerous solo titles: Iron Fist (vol. 2) in 1996, vol. 3 in 1998, and the critically acclaimed The Immortal Iron Fist (2007–2009), written by Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, and Duane Swierczynski. In 2022, the mantle was passed to Lin Lie after Danny retired. Finn Jones portrayed Rand in live-action across Netflix series like Iron Fist (2017–2018) and The Defenders (2017), with a return scheduled for Daredevil: Born Again (2027).
