Danny Rand is not the first Iron Fist; The Immortal Iron Fist series established a long tradition of incarnations, making him merely the most recent. His origin story involves K'un-L'un, a hidden city appearing on Earth once per decade. In the 1970s, Rand frequently appeared with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, known as the Daughters of the Dragon. His relationship with Misty Knight marked the first interracial romance in Marvel Comics history, featuring the first long-term interracial couple and an age gap, as Knight was significantly older. A subplot involving the Steel Serpent remained unresolved when his solo series ended but was wrapped up in Marvel Team-Up #63–64, where Rand kissed Misty Knight.

In Their Own Story

After his solo series ran for 15 issues (November 1975 – September 1977), Iron Fist was paired with Luke Cage to form the team Heroes for Hire. The title Power Man and Iron Fist began with issue #50 (April 1978), running until issue #125 (September 1986). In that final issue, Rand died at the hands of a foe, but writer Jim Owsley later noted the death was intended to be 'senseless and shocking.' Half a decade later, Namor, the Sub-Mariner #21–25 (December 1991 – April 1992) revealed this character was a doppelgänger. Rand eventually assumed the role of Thunderer, mentoring Victor Alvarez and Pei, before relinquishing his powers to successor Lin Lie. He later died by the Ch'i-Lin but was resurrected as the Ghost Fist in The Undead Iron Fist.
