Stark's journey began with a cold relationship with his father, Howard, which embittered him when Howard prioritized creating Captain America over family. On December 16, 1991, at age 21, Stark inherited the company after his parents were assassinated by the Winter Soldier while delivering Super Soldier Serum. He became known as a weapons designer and playboy until 2010, when an ambush in Afghanistan by the Ten Rings left him critically wounded. Fellow captive Ho Yinsen implanted an electromagnet in his chest to keep shrapnel from his heart. Together they built an arc reactor and a suit of powered armor; Yinsen sacrificed himself so Stark could escape. Upon returning home, Stark announced his company would no longer manufacture weapons. He later learned Obadiah Stane was staging a coup and responsible for his captivity. In a climactic battle, Stark defeated Stane, who had built a suit from the remnants of Iron Man's first armor. The next day, The Chronicles newspaper dubbed him "The Iron Man," a name Stark embraced despite the titanium-gold alloy of his suit.

In Their Own Story

In 2011, facing death from palladium poisoning in his arc reactor, Stark attended the Monaco Historic Grand Prix where he was attacked by Ivan Vanko, who wielded electrified whips powered by a miniature arc reactor. After defeating Vanko with his Mark V armor, Stark discovered a hidden message from his father: a diagram of a new element. He synthesized this element to replace the toxic palladium, saving his life. At the Stark Expo, rival Justin Hammer unveiled Vanko's drones and a weaponized version of Stark's armor piloted by Rhodes. When Vanko remotely took control of both, Stark arrived in the Mark VI armor. Together with Rhodes, they defeated Vanko and his drones, sparking a relationship between Stark and Pepper Potts. Later, in 2012, when Loki seized the Tesseract, Stark joined the Avengers. During the Battle of New York, he intercepted a nuclear missile aimed at Manhattan, flying it through a wormhole to destroy the Chitauri fleet before falling back through the portal, saved only by the Hulk.
