The Hulk is a Marvel Comics superhero created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, first seen in The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962). Lee said the character drew on both Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Lore & Background

The Hulk is the huge, green-skinned brute who shares a body with Dr. Bruce Banner, a frail, withdrawn physicist; the two personalities usually resent each other, and the comics treat the character as having dissociative identity disorder. Banner was caught in the blast of an experimental gamma bomb while saving Rick Jones, and since then emotional stress turns him into the Hulk, whether he wants it or not.

Reader's Guide

The Hulk's strength generally rises with his anger, and his rampages keep wrecking Banner's attempts at a normal life. Although usually drawn as a raging savage, he has had other personas over the years, including the gangster Joe Fixit, the merged Professor Hulk, the warrior Green Scar, the childlike Big Guy, the Devil Hulk and the scientist Doc Green.
