Penicillus is a genus of green algae that is both calcified and siphonous, belonging to the order Bryopsidales. Its common name, shaving-brush algae, comes from its structure: an upright stalk topped with a brush-like head. In current marine taxonomy, Penicillus is placed in the family Halimedaceae, tribe Udoteeae, though it has also been classified under Udoteaceae.

The algae form erect, calcified bodies that can grow up to about 15 centimeters tall. Each thallus has a rhizoidal holdfast that anchors it in sediment, a stalk, and a rounded or pear-shaped capitulum made of many loose siphons.
