Gloeotilopsis is a genus of green algae belonging to the order Ulotrichales. It includes just two species: *G. planctonica*, first identified in freshwater plankton from India, and *G. sterilis*, originally found in soil on Dauphin Island, Alabama. The algae form short, unbranched filaments made up of a single row of cells, typically two to sixteen cells long, and these filaments break apart easily. Each cell is cylindrical and elongated with rounded ends, a thin, clear cell wall, and a single parietal chloroplast that wraps around about three-quarters of the cell and runs most of its length. The chloroplast contains one pyrenoid, rarely two. The genus reproduces vegetatively through filament fragmentation. Asexually, ordinary cells can produce up to eight or sixteen zoospores; these zoospores are oval, have two flagella, a small anterior papilla, a cup-shaped chloroplast with one pyrenoid, and a single eyespot. They exit the parent cell through a tear in the wall, which then consists of H-shaped pieces similar to those in *Microspora*. Aplanospores may form instead of zoospores. No sexual reproduction has been observed. Morphologically, *Gloeotilopsis* resembles *Stichococcus* and *Gloeotila*, but it is set apart by having pyrenoids in its chloroplasts.
