Cloniophora is a genus of green algae that stands alone as the only member of the family Cloniophoraceae. These algae are most common in flowing freshwater environments, where they cling to surfaces like rocks, though they can also turn up in brackish water. Their range is broad across tropical and subtropical zones, and they appear along the Atlantic Seaboard as far north as New Brunswick.

The algae grow as upright, unbranched filaments—each just one cell wide—anchored to a surface by rhizoidal branches. The main filaments branch out, but the secondary branches are irregularly placed and noticeably smaller than the primary ones. The tips of the filaments come to a conical or blunt point.
