They secured first position and held it for the remainder of the season. On 7 April, they hosted Manchester United; a win would have secured the title, but United came back from 2–0 down to win 3–2. The following week, United lost to bottom club West Bromwich Albion, securing the title for City before their own victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
