Background
This match was Maurizio Sarri's first competitive game in charge of Chelsea, while Pep Guardiola managed his second cup final for Manchester City, having previously won the 2018 EFL Cup final against Arsenal. Manchester City qualified by winning the 2017–18 Premier League with a record 100 points, the first English top-flight club to reach that total since the three-points-for-a-win rule began. Chelsea sought their first Community Shield since 2009, when they defeated Manchester United 4–1 on penalties, having lost their last four appearances. Manchester City had won their two most recent Wembley matches in 2017–18, but had not won three consecutive games there since March 1970. The sides had met once before in the Community Shield, in 2012, with Manchester City winning 3–2.
