Season summary
The 380 fixtures were announced on 19 June 2013, and television broadcast rights were awarded two to three weeks later. The season started on 17 August 2013 and ended on 11 May 2014, with goal-line technology used for the first time in the Premier League. First place changed hands 25 times, the most since the 2001–02 season, which had 29 changes. The championship was decided on the final day for only the seventh time in league history.
Manchester City won the league with a 2–0 victory over West Ham United, finishing with 86 points; they led the league for only 14 days and scored 102 goals, one short of the record, while conceding the second fewest goals. Liverpool appeared poised to win with two weeks remaining but lost and drew in two of their last three matches, ending second with 84 points. Chelsea finished third, and defending champions Manchester United, under new manager David Moyes (sacked in April), placed seventh—their first finish outside the top four in Premier League history, their worst since 1989–90, and the first time they missed European football in 25 years.
Southampton's eighth-place finish and Everton's 72 points were club records. Sunderland became only the second Premier League team to avoid relegation after being bottom on Christmas Day; a draw at Manchester City and four wins, including away victories at Chelsea and Manchester United, secured survival. Cardiff City and Fulham were relegated on 3 May after losses away at Newcastle and Stoke City respectively, and Norwich City was relegated on the final day after losing to Arsenal.
Teams
Twenty teams made up the 2013–14 Premier League: the top seventeen from the prior season plus three promoted Championship sides. Cardiff City, Hull City, and Crystal Palace—returning after 51, 3, and 8 years away, respectively—took the places of relegated Wigan Athletic, Reading, and Queens Park Rangers. Referee kits were supplied by Nike and sponsored by EA Sports, with Nike also providing the Incyte Premier League match ball. A record ten managers left their posts mid-season.
