Under Mercer and Allison, Manchester City won the Second Division title in their first season, then claimed the league championship in 1967–68. Further trophies followed: the FA Cup in 1969, and in 1970 the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup, making City the second English team to win a European trophy and a domestic trophy in the same season.
