Sonidosaurus

Sonidosaurus, whose name honors the Sonid region of Inner Mongolia where its fossils were found, is a genus of sauropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous. This titanosaur was relatively small for its group, reaching about 9 meters (30 feet) in length. The type species, Sonidosaurus saihangaobiensis, was formally named in 2006 by Xu, Zhang, Tan, Zhao, and Tan. Its remains were first uncovered in 2001 at a quarry in the Saihangaobi area of the Saihangaobi Formation—the same site that later yielded fossils of the giant oviraptorosaur Gigantoraptor.

In terms of classification, Sonidosaurus blends derived titanosaur traits with more primitive features, hinting at a basal position within the group. It shares notable similarities with other Asian titanosaurs, particularly Opisthocoelicaudia, suggesting a close evolutionary relationship. A 2017 review of Asian titanosaurs placed Sonidosaurus among the lithostrotians, with possible ties to saltasaurids. One key shared feature is a posterior centrodiapophyseal lamina on its dorsal vertebrae, a trait also seen in saltasaurids and the Bor Guve titanosaur.

Sonidosaurus is not part of the Iren Dabasu Fauna. Its habitat was shared with the largest theropods of the region: the oviraptorosaur Gigantoraptor and the tyrannosauroid Alectrosaurus. The largest ornithischian from this fauna, Gilmoreosaurus, also lived alongside it.
