The holotype specimen, IGM 100/84, was found at the Khara Khutul site in southeastern Mongolia's Bayan Shireh Formation, which dates to the Late Cretaceous. In 1980, it was discussed again as part of a new dinosaur group called Segnosauria, created by Mongolian paleontologists Rinchen Barsbold and Altangerel Perle. Three years later, in 1983, Barsbold formally named and described the type species *Enigmosaurus mongoliensis*. The preserved material is a partial skeleton without a skull, including a well-preserved pelvic girdle and some vertebrae. Some therizinosaur fossils from the Iren Dabasu Formation were initially thought to belong to Enigmosaurus. Anatomy of the Enigmatic Pelvis

Zanno and colleagues in 2010 identified additional diagnostic traits: prominent cranial and caudal processes on a dorsoventrally flattened pubic boot, fused pubic feet forming a V-shaped medial expansion, and a tetraradiate process created by the medial fusion of the obturator process with the pubic body. The sacrum appears to preserve six vertebrae with elongated transverse processes. Interestingly, areas of bone resorption and remodeling on the ilium may suggest the individual was quite old, which could complicate whether the obturator-pubis fusion is a true autapomorphy. Beyond the pelvis, a handful of poorly preserved elements—ribs, a humeral end, a tentative radius, and an ulna fragment—carry the same specimen number, though their association remains uncertain.
Taxonomic Tug-of-War
Since its 1983 description, Enigmosaurus has occupied a shifting position within therizinosaur phylogeny. Barsbold originally placed it in its own family, Enigmosauridae, a grouping now considered obsolete, largely because of its aberrant pelvic morphology. Subsequent work reassigned it to Segnosauridae, the name later absorbed into Therizinosauridae. In 2010, Lindsay Zanno recovered it in a more basal position within Therizinosauroidea, while Hartman and colleagues in 2019 pulled it back toward a derived therizinosauroid position. A persistent question has been whether Enigmosaurus is simply a junior synonym of Erlikosaurus. Both come from the same formation, Enigmosaurus is known primarily from pelvic material, and Erlikosaurus lacks a known pelvis, so distinguishing characters are scarce. However, most researchers reject the synonymy: the Enigmosaurus pelvis does not resemble that of Segnosaurus as one would expect if it were Erlikosaurus, the two differ greatly in size, and they come from different stratigraphic levels—lower versus upper—within the Bayan Shireh Formation.
