Jinbeisaurus
First non-avian theropod named from Shanxi Province, China.
Jinbeisaurus, whose name translates to "northern Shanxi Province lizard" in reference to the Chinese province where it was found, is a genus of tyrannosauroid dinosaur that lived during the Upper Cretaceous. Its fossils come from the Huiquanpu Formation in Shanxi Province, China. The only known species is Jinbeisaurus wangi, and it holds the distinction of being the first non-avian theropod ever named from Shanxi.
The species is known from a single specimen, cataloged as SMG V0003. This holotype includes both maxillae (upper jaw bones), a partial right dentary (lower jaw bone), two neck vertebrae, five back vertebrae, and a partial right pubis (hip bone). Several features of the maxilla, teeth, and pubis set it apart from other tyrannosaurs.
When first described in 2020, Wu and colleagues determined the holotype likely came from an adult. Their analysis placed Jinbeisaurus as more evolutionarily advanced than related tyrannosauroids like Xiongguanlong and Suskityrannus, but more primitive than the family Tyrannosauridae. However, a 2025 study by Voris and colleagues reexamined the specimen and concluded it belonged to a juvenile or immature individual, suggesting it may represent an immature form of a late-diverging tyrannosaurine. Later that same year, Zanno and Napoli, while investigating the validity of Nanotyrannus, consistently found Jinbeisaurus grouped with Bistahieversor as a basal albertosaurine.
