Background
By 2001 the anime had covered most of its source material, and Nippon Animation chose to end it rather than continue with filler. Fans were unhappy with that ending, so Nippon Animation followed it with three OVA series that picked up during the Yorknew City arc and went on through the Greed Island arc.
Toshihiko Sahashi wrote the background music for the series and for all three OVAs. In North America, Viz Media put the anime out on four DVD box sets between December 2008 and December 2009, and it started airing on the Funimation Channel in the spring of 2009.
Its popularity was more modest than the manga's, but critical reception was generally favorable. It placed 16th in the Anime Grand Prix for 2000 and climbed to fourth the following year.
