Lucifer Morningstar

Background

Lucifer, Lilith and Charlie make up Hell's royal family. Lilith left him some time after Charlie was born, and at the start of the series she has been away on "important business" for seven years. Lucifer makes his first physical appearance in the first-season episode "Dad Beat Dad", when Charlie invites him to the hotel: unimpressed, he clashes with Alastor over who is the better father figure to her ("Hell's Greatest Dad"), but he arranges her meeting with Heaven and leaves on better terms with her. In "The Show Must Go On" he saves Charlie from Adam during the Extermination and helps her rebuild the hotel. In the season-two finale he is used as the power source for Vox's weapon against Heaven. He is pansexual.

Fan interest in the character ran high before the first season, since Lucifer had not physically appeared in any Hazbin Hotel work until then. Reviewers singled out Jeremy Jordan's performance: Collider wrote that his Lucifer stole every scene he was in and provided some of the season's best songs, Comic Book Resources called him one of the show's most layered characters for his mix of charisma and insecurity, and several outlets praised the emotional scenes between Lucifer and Charlie. Some religious commentators condemned the sympathetic portrayal of the devil as unbiblical.
