Background
The story picks up shortly after the first game. The protagonist, Gorion's Ward, has drawn the attention of Jon Irenicus, a powerful and sinister mage, and much of the game takes place in and around Athkatla, a city in the country of Amn. Players lead a party of up to six, the created hero plus companions recruited along the way, in isometric, pausable real-time play on the Infinity Engine. Development began in January 1999 with the aim of improving on the first game in every way, from a list built out of fan, press and internal criticism that included 800x600 resolution, 3D support and character kits. Because the engine already worked from the start, the team could spend its time on content.
