Lore & Background
The series began in 2002 as part of Wizards of the Coast's "Year of the Drow" event. Salvatore said the idea came from his editor Philip Athans, who wrote the fifth book; Salvatore, Richard Baker, Thomas Reid, Richard Lee Byers and Athans planned the storyline together, and Salvatore acted as content editor for the drow city of Menzoberranzan. The story is set in 1372 DR, when Lolth falls silent and stops granting spells to her priestesses, and a band of drow sets out to learn why. Gerald Brom painted the covers.
