Plot summary

The Moonshae Isles serve as the backdrop for this novel and its trilogy. The Beast, known as Kazgoroth, enters the world with the goal of breaking the Earthmother's power. It shifts its form at will, traveling across Gwynneth and spreading corruption wherever it goes. Its target is a large force of Northmen raiders gathered at Oman's Isle, located in the heart of the Moonshaes, who are readying an attack on Corwell.

These raiders believe they are following King Thelgaar Ironhand, but they are deceived—the Beast has slain the true king and taken his shape, making this far more than a simple plunder. The Earthmother feels the pain of the corruption spreading through her land, which is her body, and she rouses her children: the Leviathan, the Pack, and Kamerynn the Unicorn. Each attempts to halt Kazgoroth in their own manner, but their efforts prove insufficient.

In Caer Corwell, the royal seat of Corwell's king, rumors of approaching war spread. The Ffolk prepare for battle, yet the enemy's point of attack remains unknown. Tristan must rally the Ffolk against this dual threat of human invaders and demonic evil. With Robyn's aid, he faces overwhelming odds and matures into the responsible leader destined to take over his father's kingdom.
