Final Fantasy Codexery

Chaos

The archdemon Garland becomes at the end of a 2,000-year time loop.

Chaos is the final boss of the original Final Fantasy. The Warriors of Light begin with access to the Kingdom of Coneria and the ruined Temple of Chaos, and after defeating the Four Fiends and restoring the crystals they open a portal in the temple that takes them two thousand years into the past.

Lore & Background

There they learn that the Fiends sent the knight Garland, now the archdemon Chaos, back in time, and that he in turn sent the Fiends to the future, creating a loop that lets him live forever. The Warriors defeat Chaos, end the loop and return to the present, their deeds surviving only as legend.

Chaos appears as a boss in the Stormblood expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, and Final Fantasy XII's Esper of the same name is derived from him. Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an alternate-universe prequel that acts as an origin story for Chaos and the four Warriors of Light.
