Cetra
The near-extinct tribe with a bond to the Planet, also called the Ancients.
The Cetra, also known as the Ancients, are a near-extinct human tribe in Final Fantasy VII who maintain a strong connection to the Planet and its Lifestream. Aerith Gainsborough, the flower seller who joins Cloud's party, is one of the last surviving Cetra.
Lore & Background
Two thousand years before the game, the hostile extraterrestrial Jenova arrived on the Planet and began infecting the Cetra with a virus; they were nearly wiped out, and the survivors imprisoned her. Sephiroth was later created from Jenova.
Shinra captures Aerith because it believes a Cetra can reveal the Promised Land, which it imagines is overflowing with Lifestream energy. At a Cetra temple Sephiroth reveals his plan to cast Meteor with the Black Materia, and Aerith goes alone to an abandoned Cetra city to stop him, where he kills her.
